Cape Breton Works is a labour market study being undertaken by JCI Cape Breton. We are specifically studying employment opportunities within the knowledge sector.
Recently, the media has highlighted the inability for employers in Cape Breton to fill vacant positions. Local employers are having a difficult time finding adequately experienced individuals to fill employment positions. It is widely felt that this trend in a shortage of skilled workers will continue grow, not only in Cape Breton, but also across Canada as Baby Boomers retire.
Confounding the demographic reality of an ageing population is the current trend in out-migration. This situation is also not unique to Cape Breton, but we are seeking unique solutions to out-migration and to skilled labour shortage in the knowledge sector.
WHO DO WE WANT TO TALK TO?
Outmigrants. People who used to live in Cape Breton but have moved away. We want to know:
- Why they left
- Would they come back
- Their perceptions of Cape Breton
- Their perceptions of the Cape Breton Economy
JUST WHAT IS A KNOWLEDGE WORKER?
According to the Government of Canada, a knowledge worker is:
“A professional who applies his or her intellectual capacities to the acquisition, processing, management and communication of knowledge.”
